In this episode, you met Pygmy Hippos Timmy and Petre as they were brought from other zoos and introduced together at Taronga for the first time.

After arrival at the zoo, Petre and Timmy were carefully monitored and introduced in December. Zoo staff are reasonably sure that Petre is now expecting a baby Pygmy Hippo, but will know for sure if she does not come into oestrus again. Pygmy Hippos usually have a single calf after a gestation of six to seven months.

These two are getting along fine.

Dhole caesarean

An emergency caesarean had to be performed on a dhole after a puppy became stuck. Sadly one of the pups did not make it. The remaining pup 'Jangala' was hand reared by keepers over many weeks and then gradually reintroduced to the dhole group. He is now completely integrated into the group and enjoys hanging out with his dad in particular. Dholes are classified as endangered.

Lion with a toothache

Jasiri, the adult male lion at Western Plains Zoo had a broken tooth that required an operation. Jasiri's tooth was repaired by an expert dental surgeon. He's made a complete recovery and has been athletically climbing trees to bring down his meat meal. Jasiri lives with the two beautiful lionesses,

Njeri and Shinyanga. African Lions are threatened in the wild.
