When a male Lion takes over a pride, he kills most of the cubs to ensure all new cubs born are his offspring.
Arne and Gigi, the ex-circus elephants have settled in very well to their new home at Western Plains Zoo. They've been introduced to the resident Asian Elephant female, Burma, and the three have been seen swimming together and socialising. Adjacent to their facilities at the zoo is another area with two African Elephants. Arna and Gigi have taken quite an interest in the larger African females, trumpeting a 'hello' and watching them inquisitively. Zoo elephant staff have been in contact with the former owners of the elephants to keep them up-to-date with the progress of Arna and Gigi.
Njanu recovered completely from his foot operation. He is one of the younger giraffes of the herd and once he was back with the group, he tested his newly-trimmed hooves by galloping around the exhibit and generally having fun. Njanu has also been playing with the zoo's newest born giraffes, Thembi and Amani. The zoo vets are extremely pleased with Njanu's condition.
After giving birth to her beautiful cubs, mother Pepper commenced doing a great job suckling the young and keeping them warm in their nest box. The cubs grew rapidly and started to get inquisitive about the world outside the nest box. This week the cubs emerged into their exhibit for the first time. They've been busy exploring the tall trees and thick foliage as well as discovering all the special places keepers store their food. Typical babies, they run around friskily for a while, but then need to succumb to sleep back inside their night dens.
Avril made a full recovery from her serious injuries and was given intensive care at Taronga's Wildlife Clinic. When she was fully mended and fit, she was returned to the wild at a beach near to where she was originally found. Avril and another rehabilitated Little Penguin quickly negotiated the shore break and headed out to sea to go fishing. Taronga Zoo participates in the recovery program for this species through a breed-for-release program as well as conducting local education courses encouraging neighbours of threatened penguin colonies to care for their habitat.
