Miya the Australian Sea-lion

Miya the Australian Sea-lion was orphaned as a pup on Kangaroo Island in May 2002 when her mother was taken by a shark. A ranger spotted her in distress and as she was too young to fend for herself, Miya was brought to Taronga Zoo.

Although Taronga Zoo's expert vets and keepers restored Miya back to health, she was still too young to have learnt the necessary survival skills from her mother before she was orphaned. To teach her these skills the keepers introduced Miya to ‘seal pre-school' with the other Australian Sea-lion pups.

Miya quickly showed her aptitude in working with people. Six years later, she is one of the main stars of the show, an interactive presentation teaching zoo visitors about the precious and diverse wildlife that live in the Southern Oceans habitat.

Along with other seals, she has enthralled the audience as she gracefully moves through the water, showing how her species is uniquely adapted to thrive in their marine environment.

During the 20-minute presentation visitors can have a unique view of the seals and their behaviours while also learning how the keepers train seals and about their diet and other aspects of their care. Those lucky enough to be in the front row can also expect to get a little wet.

In Miya's exhibit, visitors will be able to meet some of the resident seals as well as learn about their species and wild habitats.
