It is often the case in Southeast Asia that conservation legislation is in place before the legislation can be enforced. Under such circumstances the most cost effective in situ conservation is actually the practical enforcement of local wildlife laws.
Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Centre has provided training for wildlife protection officers from more than 35 provinces in Vietnam. This specialized training is focused on introducing front-line officers to the critical threat to turtle survival resulting from the turtle trade in Vietnam. A practical and accurate field guide is essential in building turtle identification skills amongst front-line enforcement officers.
A new version of the field guide is required in early 2009. The new version will be more practical and useful for identification purposes, particularly in the hands of enforcement agency staff, where turtle identification is crucial to successful enforcement of the law.
