Rainforest Rescue's new "Plant a Rainforest Project" offers the public the opportunity of contributing towards revegetating cleared and degraded areas of the ancient Daintree lowland rainforest. The area is important habitat for 122 threatened species and has the highest concentration of primitive plant families in the world.
Trees will be planted on private land placed under nature refuge covenant such that the trees planted will be protected forever by the Queensland Nature Conservation Act of 1992.
A critical factor is the supply, not only of suitable species of rainforest trees, but species of local stock to ensure their genetic makeup is best suited to the area. This requires the seed to be sourced from within the Daintree lowlands. At the moment there is no person or organisation doing this on a commercial basis.
Funding supplied for this project will cover the costs of:
The seedlings will serve as appropriate planting stock for revegetating one hectare of Cassowary food-trees protected for ever under covenant on private nature refuges between different sections of the Daintree National Park.
